Building The Foundation: Startup Classroom Supplies

The Description

After completing Teach for America’s - 2017 Phoenix Institute I will be responsible for my very own classroom! I will be teaching a brand new K-2 program at the Grant Elementary School in Hollywood, CA. My students will be on the autism spectrum, and will be working hard to make grade level progress throughout the year in a supported but rigorous curriculum. . One of the biggest hurdles that students in high need schools face is a lack of the necessary materials that are needed daily. This is even more true in a classroom with children with special needs. On top of pencils, markers, paper, and books, they need specialized seating, light, and sensory processing tools to be successful. To get the year started off right, I will use the funds that I raise to purchase the startup supplies needed to welcome my students to a classroom that is clean and stocked full with materials. This will allow me to provide the required supplies to students that otherwise would not have them. Thank you so much in advance for supporting me and my students at the beginning of this exciting journey.

PledgeCents allows me to keep whatever I raise, so anything you can contribute really will make a difference for my first year. I want to make a great impression and a lasting impact on my first group of students and letting them know that they have a community that supports them both near and far will definitely get us on the right track. Here is a complete list of the materials that your generous investment will help provide for the students of my very first classroom:

Tiggly offers physical manipulatives that interact with literacy, math, and creative thinking learning apps for students. This provides students with opportunity to engage in digital learning through developmentally appropriate technology. The Tiggly Thinker Kit combines one set of Tiggly Words and one set of Tiggly Digits.

Back Up Plan

If I do not meet my goal, I will purchase as many materials as possible. I will prioritize the materials that are most essential to students (pencils, paper, etc.) as they are the most important to ensuring that students can participate in daily lessons.

A little background

June 8, 2017

Hi all,

Another day, another fundraiser. I'm sure you're sick of hearing from me.

As many of you know, I will be teaching a brand new K-2 program at the Grant Elementary School in Hollywood. My kids will all be on the autism spectrum, and be working hard to make grade level progress throughout the year in a supported yet rigorous curriculum. In order to support my students, many of whom may be English Language Learners and eligible for free/reduced lunch, I need far more than basic classroom supplied. We'll need alternative seating options, like yoga balls or wiggle chairs. We'll need manipulatives to keep hands distracted so minds can work. We'll need lamps and covers for the florescent lights to keep sensory overload at bay. We'll need weighted blankets and other sensory input tools to keep us stimulated and on task. AND we'll need books, crayons, markers, paper, pencils, dramatic play materials, and everything else an early elementary school classroom needs to be a joyful, safe, and exciting learning environment. I know I ask a lot of everyone already, but please consider donating to this fundraiser.

For all the kids,

Ava

About the Creator

I am excited to be a part of the TFA family and join the movement to solve education inequity in this country and provide all students with a quality education. I'm fortunate enough to be selected from a nationwide talent applicant pool to join a teacher corps comprised of leaders who commit a minimum of two years to teach in high need public schools. This summer I will be participating in an intensive skill and knowledge development program aiming to increase student achievement as well as a comprehensive professional development program including seminars, discussion groups, workshops, and content and professional learning communities specific to teaching license areas. I can't wait for my first year with Teach for America.
