The Description
It's amazing how a little stick of wood and lead can be so important in the life of a student. Especially to the life of a student from a low socioeconomic neighborhood where school supplies are not as easy to obtain and maintain. It is not enough to have a stock of pencils in the classroom, but we must make sure each of our students have one to go home with in order to complete their homework. Often times, those pencils do not make their way back to the classroom. Otherwise, pencils break, dwindle down, or just simply lose their way.
I read once that the average teacher can easily go through 60 pencils a month. You can assume almost double that in a low income neighborhood, where one classroom can easily go through 800-1,000 pencils a year. At an average of $0.10 per pencil, the $500 goal I am trying to meet could supply potentially 5,000 pencils to my school.
While this will certainly not supply each room with enough pencils to last the year, it is definitely a start and of course, any little bit helps. And in the spirit of any little bit helps, keep in mind that even a $3.00 donation supplies approximately one student with enough pencils to use for the year.
Every child deserves equal rights to the tools they need to succeed, regardless of their zip code.
Thank you for joining The Pencil Project and taking an interest in a child's future.
Back Up Plan
If I do not meet my goal we will take the money we have earned and use it to purchase as many quality pencils as we can. Boxes of 144 pencils are available on Amazon for $16-18.
