Building a Math Resource Center from the Ground Up

The Description

With these funds I will provide math enrichment activities to Kindergarteners that will reinforce key concepts, promote mastery of learning of the standards and build a successful start so that students’ test scores for 1st graders and beyond will improve.

The main component of this proposal is to establish a math resource center filled with hands-on manipulatives, games and a tablet to use in the classroom to reinforce concepts taught in the classroom. The resources purchased will be non-consumable so they are 100% reusable. The various resources and the quantity will be enough for use in cooperative learning centers and in a whole group setting.

There are 6 manipulatives ranging from $120 for magnatiles to $20 for the remainder , 17 games averaging $20 per game and 19 counting/shape books averaging $7 per book.  The tablet is $400 so that each member of the 5 groupings has individual access.

Teachers need the opportunity to teach with manipulatives and games, create and access meaningful projects to combine with rote activities to enrich learning. The resources will allow students to be active participants in their learning. The games and manipulatives will support problem solving by emphasizing many ways of solving problems, utilize a variety of evaluations and provide a supportive classroom where students have opportunities for success.  The Counting/Shape books will help students move beyond memorization of numbers and understand shapes, recognize numbers and how they look.

Back Up Plan

If we do not reach our goal I will purchase manipulatives first, then the computer tablet and limit the number of games purchased.  I will also explore other avenues for raising fund to cover the cost of the entire project.

About the Creator

After teaching 3rd grade for 9 years, I became a kindergarten teacher and lack appropriate level resources. I used my own money to build a classroom library because I know firsthand the importance of providing quality reading materials to promote successful reading achievement and it is difficult to understand math without reading. I want to provide math enrichment activities to kindergarteners that will reinforce key concepts, promote mastery of learning of the standards and build a successful start so that students’ test scores for 1std graders and beyond will improve.

Eastgate Elementary is an inner city low income school with 308 students, 80% are black, 6% are white,5% are two or more races. All students receive free lunches. The Ohio Local Report Card evaluates Eastgate as follows:
Achievement-Indicator: F
Achievement-Performance: D
Progress-Gap Closing-Annual Measureable Objective: F
Eastgate ranks worse than 98% of elementary schools in Ohio. For winter 2015-16, the Northwest Evaluation Association/MAP: Math Primary Grades OH testing reported that only 8 out of 40 first graders at Eastgate were at or above District Grade Level Mean, 85 % were at the lowest percentile.
