Robots, Computers, and Coding, Oh My!
$154
$500 goal
The Description
With these funds I will...
- purchase a Dash and Dot Wonder kit ($199.95)
- purchase a Kano Computer Kit ($149.99)
- maze creating supplies (like painters tape)
I will use these purchases to create a problem solving center in my classroom. Students will use a child friendly manual to put together their own computer and once completed they will be able to use the computer to learn and write code. Students will create mazes and tasks for the Dash and Dot robots using multiple types of coding programs and apps. These activities will provide an alternative pathway to problem solving skills needed in all areas of learning. This station will provide dynamic learning opportunities through exploration. Students will connect math and science by spontaneously uncovering relationships and patterns.
I teach at a Title 1 school in a unique situation. Students from two closed schools in our district are coming together at a third school while we wait for our new school to be built. It is critically important that I create a collaborative learning environment by offering students opportunities to work together to solve problems. Approximately 98% of my students qualify for free/reduced lunch and at least 50% of my students do not have internet or technology access at home. Projects like this problem solving center will provide opportunities for my students that they will not experience anywhere else. The skills that they learn by participating in these types of activities prepare them for success in middle-school, high-school and adulthood.
Back Up Plan
If I do not meet my goal I will purchase...
- I will purchase a less expensive package of the Dash or Dot or...
- I will not purchase the Kano Computer kit or....
- I will purchase alternative seating for my students or...
- I will purchase needed classroom supplies like crayons, paper, and craft supplies

How Robots in English Class Can Spark Empathy and Improve Writing
I am an avid "twitterite". I use Twitter to stay connected and learn new skills to improve my teaching craft. I was searching on Twitter this morning and I found this article from MindShift that illustrates why this project is so important to me. This article features high school teacher using a different kind of robot, but the skills and strategies she is teaching her students is exactly what I want to teach mine. Please read and share and consider supporting my cause if you haven't had a chance yet. I appreciate your support.
Thank you,
Rebecca Cissel
