Michaelena Stinziano
Kindergarten teacher
After teaching 3rd grade for 9 years, I became a kindergarten teacher and lack appropriate level resources. I used my own money to build a classroom library because I know firsthand the importance of providing quality reading materials to promote successful reading achievement and it is difficult to understand math without reading. I want to provide math enrichment activities to kindergarteners that will reinforce key concepts, promote mastery of learning of the standards and build a successful start so that students’ test scores for 1std graders and beyond will improve. Eastgate Elementary is an inner city low income school with 308 students, 80% are black, 6% are white,5% are two or more races. All students receive free lunches. The Ohio Local Report Card evaluates Eastgate as follows: Achievement-Indicator: F Achievement-Performance: D Progress-Gap Closing-Annual Measureable Objective: F Eastgate ranks worse than 98% of elementary schools in Ohio. For winter 2015-16, the Northwest Evaluation Association/MAP: Math Primary Grades OH testing reported that only 8 out of 40 first graders at Eastgate were at or above District Grade Level Mean, 85 % were at the lowest percentile.
