Diedra Nissen
Algebra/Geometry Teacher
Hello! My name is Diedra Nissen and I am a fifth year Algebra and Geometry teacher at Roosevelt High School in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. I am also a cheerleading coach and completed my masters degree this summer through South Dakota State University. I discovered Mathalicious last year at a NCTM (National Counsil of Teachers of Mathematics) conference and fell in love. I was able to take advantage of the free trial and implement several lessons at the end of my school year. We are currently planned to start school on September 6th and a Mathalicious teacher subscription is $320/teacher per year. I have already begun planning my year and would love to implement more lessons. I am sourcing to help with the funds for starting my school year and to pay for this subscription. I appreciate any contributions to help my students enjoy math even more this year!!

Priya Alcantar
6-8 Math Teacher
I teach middle school math at a K-8 charter school in Fruitvale in Oakland, California. Most of my students are underrepresented minorities, with about an 85% Latino population. Many of them are English Learners whose parents don't speak English, and several of my students are newcomers and don't speak any English at all. Most of my students will be the first in their family to go to college. They inspire me with their perseverance every day. Despite the challenges they face, they come to school to make a better future for themselves. When they are offered opportunity, they thrive. Last Spring, several eighth graders were selected to be part of an after school program with Google. Their final projects were outstanding, and they were all invited back to continue their learning in a summer program. I want to provide opportunities like this and meaningful learning experiences for ALL my students.

Julie Wright
6th Grade Math Teacher
When I was in middle school, I wanted to be a mathematician, an author, or someone who worked for NASA -- not as a glamorous astronaut, but as a person in Mission Control solving the hard problems so the astronauts could explore for all of us. I never did become any of those things, exactly, and yet I sort of did. I've been drawn to writing over and over through my life; I've enjoyed doing years of math as a scientist, parent, and teacher; and now I am basically doing Mission Control to help kids explore math and achieve for all of us and our future. I teach sixth grade math at da Vinci Arts Middle School, a focus option public school in Portland, Oregon. Previously, I've taught math to students in sixth through twelfth grades and physical science to seventh and ninth graders. Teaching is my second workplace career, following my previous experiences as a technical and grant proposal writer for a chemistry software company and a stay-at-home parent to my two sons. I was a math and chemistry double major at Swarthmore College, have a master's degree in Physical Chemistry from Columbia University, and got my teaching degree with an Advanced Math endorsement from Lewis & Clark in 2009, adding a Chemistry endorsement in 2011. I believe passionately that all students can thrive and grow as they use math to solve problems and study our world.

My name is Abigail Swyers and I am a 6th grade Math and Science teacher at a Title I school. This challenging, yet rewarding school lacks some important resources in helping our students growth. This school is a high poverty rate, so all of our students receive free lunch and breakfast. I would love raise money to help support my classroom as well as other 6th grade classrooms this school year! Thanks for reading!

Teaching is my passion. I have taught on the South Side of Chicago for 14.5 years. And, although I earned a Master's in Ed. Administration some years ago, inside the classroom is where I love to be. My current position is at the only Chicago Public School dedicated to exclusively serving expecting and teen moms. I serve as the middle school teacher. I enjoy creating lesson that the most reluctant learners can't resist. I include technology, current events and work to help students find their own personal connection to the the curriculum.

I adopt and adapt all sorts of best practices, independent of bandwagons and jargon, to do what is best of the kids I have in the moments I have them. I try to grow thinkers and learners and problem solvers, and I try to do it with kindness, empathy, a little sarcasm, creativity, some hustle, and a whole lot of passion. Too many kids dislike math. They think they are bad at it, that they can't do it, and it wears on them. I work hard every day to help math math come to life, in big and little ways, to make it less intimidating, less overwhelming, and even if kids still walk away not loving it, I do my best to help them build confidence that will carry with them beyond our classroom. I've been teaching since 2000 in a number of schools in a number of states, and no matter where I am, no matter the size of the school, its demographics, its successes or its struggles, the kids are always incredible -- and that is why I continue to do what I do.

I am blessed to teach in an arts academy so I get to draw on my own musical and dance experience. It helps me connect with my students.
