The Description

With these funds I will...

1) Purchase the extra high-quality art supplies needed for students to produce high-quality works of art: $150.00 worth of drawing paper, painting, and drawing supplies.

2) Purchase Professional artwork through the Recovering the Classics Campaign (http://recoveringtheclassics.com/) to hang alongside student work, and to serve as inspiration for student artists: ~$50.00 plus shipping.

3) Frames and Display supplies: $50.00 worth of frames for the professional artwork, $150.00 worth of mats, labels, and wall fixtures.

4) Opening exhibit celebration supplies: $100.00 worth of food, beverages, celebration decorations.

I want to have my elementary Artists develop and design their own imaginative covers, inspired by their favorite stories and also the Recovering the Classics designs produced by professional working artists. Literacy is so important for developing students and student artists, and I believe conducting an exhibition of student and professional artwork would be extremely rewarding for both the students and their communities. The artwork would all be exhibited at a culminating event where the student and professional work would be displayed side by side and excerpts from selected novels and books would be read aloud for the students and guests.

This interdisciplinary event would be the result of a month-long endeavor for students across all grade levels.  Ultimately, the entire KIPP Empower Academy would be afforded an opportunity to create their own original artwork, that would be displayed as a culminating semester celebration.  This event would bring together all students and families at the local Public Library that would celebrate reading, and artwork.

Back Up Plan

I will purchase art production supplies for my students.  We will still continue to do the project, but may have to go without the inspiration from the professional artworks. I may also have to scale down the exhibit celebration as well in order to stay within my budget.

About the Creator

Hello! My name is Sara Gaechter, and I am very proud to announce to the world that I am the new Art Teacher at KIPP Empower Academy.

A little bit about me: I grew up in a very small town outside of New Haven, Connecticut to a family of teachers. Education has always been a huge focus in my life, and growing up I often sought out teaching and leadership roles. As a teenager I worked as a dance teacher and choreographer for a theater company and that was when I truly fell in love with teaching. My passion for the arts and the teaching profession have only grown stronger over the years, and I am proud to say that in May 2015, I graduated from Ithaca College in Upstate New York, with a B.A. in Art Education and a minor in Art History. Directly after graduation, I moved here to Los Angeles, and am very excited to be able to live in and get to know the city.

I am very grateful for the opportunity to work with and learn from our scholars at KEA this year. I have many exciting things planned for the students and community, and am looking forward to seeing how far we can push our KEA student artists, with your help.

I invite you to reach out to me and become involved, in any capacity, with the art program this year at KEA.

One way to keep involved with the KEA Art classes this year is through social media. Our schools are noteworthy for our technological innovation, and I hope to extend our Arts program into and through the 21st century.

Students will be documenting their own artwork on both Twitter and Instagram, and you can follow the accounts by searching for @time4art on both platforms.

Thank you for taking the time to read about myself and my art class! Together we can truly make a difference in the lives of our scholars!
