Reading is Cool: A Novel Concept

The Description

This year I am raising funds for two reasons. Primarily to acquire basic school supplies for students who may not have the ability to get them for themselves. This will include composition books for the interactive notebooks we'll use this year, as well as glue, printer ink, pencils galore, and any other necessities.

The second reason I'm fundraising is to purchase culturally relevant books for our classroom library. Last year, students really enjoyed being able to pick through real life books on our bookshelf and look for things that interested them. However I don't have enough books that are of interest and on level for my students. Frankly I need an entire shelf devoted to famous soccer players, and another entire shelf devoted to video game designers or video game fantasy novels. The goal is to get students reading real life books by choice.

With the funds you so graciously donated last year I was able to purchase The Hate U Give and The Absolutely True Story of a Part Time Indian. Both were my students' absolute favorites, with some students even taking The Hate U Give home to read with their parents and families.

Back Up Plan

If we do not reach our goal I will prioritize purchasing classroom supplies, specifically composition books and pencils. I will also buy an oil rig and use it to look for naturally occurring sources of printer ink. Should I succeed, you'll never see me make another fundraising page.

Hi Becca! I'm so proud of you. I taught a Reading Comprehension class in San Francisco for four years, and I know how important it is to have books that are culturally relevant, as well as hook our students so they discover joy and power in reading. Keep up the good work that you are doing! Take care, Lynne Roberts

About the Creator

I am excited to start my second year teaching 8th grade reading in Pleasant Grove as a part of Dallas Independent School District. Last year I dipped my toe in the water and this year I can't wait to dive head first into novel study and critical thinking skills with my students. When I'm not teaching I coach soccer and hope to encourage more students to read books outside of school.
