Building the Foundation: Back to School with Miss Stone

The Description

As a teacher I am responsible for my very own classroom! I engage daily with my students and their families, and it is my responsibility to ensure that my classroom is a welcoming environment for everyone. One of the biggest challenges is making sure that all of my students have the materials they need to participate in class daily. This is especially important at the beginning of the school year, when we set the tone for how important it is for everyone to be a part of our classroom community.

To get the year started off right, I will use the funds that I raise to purchase the supplies needed to welcome my students back to their classroom that is clean and stocked full with materials. This will allow me to provide the required supplies to students that otherwise would not have them. I will also purchase copy paper to ensure that I can provide my students with high quality learning materials, whether that is exit tickets, independent activities, or homework.

Paper, pencils, highlighters, books, and a classroom full of supplies are school resources that many students take for granted. As I begin to prepare for my second year of teaching in a very underserved district, I know firsthand that the aforementioned resources are often times difficult, if not impossible, to obtain due to financial constraints. Challenges students face should come from analyzing a difficult document or leading their basketball team to a championship, not from wondering where their next meal is coming from or whether or not they’ll have a pencil to use on their math final. A lack of school funding (or not being able to afford school supplies) should NEVER be the reason for a student’s inability to succeed.

This perpetual lack of school funding (nationwide) is only one issue of public education inequity in our country that I am so incredibly passionate about, and working to mend.

Every student deserves a safe and supportive classroom environment full of enough supplies to last the entire school year. Your kind, generous support will help my students this school year while simultaneously helping to set them up for success in the future.

I am so appreciative of the continued support and love from all of my family and friends. Your support goes so much further then you can possibly imagine. Thank you from the very bottom of my heart

Every dollar I receive will be put towards classroom supplies so anything you can contribute really will make a difference in our classroom. As always, I want to make a great impression and a lasting impact on my group of students and letting them know that they have a community that supports them both near and far will definitely get us on the right track. Here is a complete list of the materials that your generous investment will help provide:

Back Up Plan

If I do not meet my goal, I will purchase as many materials as possible. I will prioritize the materials that are most essential to students (pencils, paper, etc.) as they are the most important to ensuring that students can participate in daily lessons.

I am excited to be a part of the TFA family and join the movement to solve education inequity in this country and provide all students with a quality education. I'm fortunate enough to be selected from a nationwide talent applicant pool to join a teacher corps comprised of leaders who commit a minimum of two years to teach in high need public schools. This summer I will be participating in an intensive skill and knowledge development program aiming to increase student achievement as well as a comprehensive professional development program including seminars, discussion groups, workshops, and content and professional learning communities specific to teaching license areas. I can't wait for my first year with Teach for America.
