The Description

With these funds I will help students will use slow cookers to prepare healthy meals & learn about parenting skills, financial planning, health & nutrition.

Objectives:

Students will learn about healthy eating & nutrition for teens & babies.

Students will research healthy slow cooker recipes.

Students will develop daily schedules & discuss lifestyle choices.

Students will prepare nutritional meals using a slow cooker.

Activities:  After taking public transit & dropping their babies off at childcare downstairs, our students attend math, science, English & history classes working toward a high school diploma.

• This year students will visit local farmers markets, select fresh, seasonal produce & use slow cookers to make soups & stews. Most of the students were not familiar with slow cookers & the benefits of having meals ready when they reach home with hungry little ones!!

• During this project they will learn about healthy food choices (including trying new veggies!), selecting & preparing recipes & analyzing the savings of time & money using a slow cooker. Our students will research healthy food choices & select produce from local farmers markets. They will discuss their favorite foods & the healthy foods their babies enjoy.

• They will develop daily schedules, detailing time spent on child care, home & work duties & schoolwork. They will estimate time & cost spent on cooking (or picking up fast food).

• Students will learn to use the 6 slow cookers (at $30 each) & learn to prepare a variety of produce for soups & stews with our library cookbooks. We will encourage students to use family/cultural seasonings ($20 of organic seasonings) & recipes, too.

• Students will compare time & money spent using the slow cooker to have a healthy meal ready for dinner vs. fast food choices. By learning about slow cookers, our students will create many delicious meals for their little ones & the babies will have many healthy dinners!!!

• Students will be encouraged to share family & cultural recipes. 50 students & 4 teachers will participate.

• Our project finale will include a “slow cooker taste test” for all students!

Back Up Plan

If I do not meet my goal I will purchase as many slow cookers & tools as possible.
