Building The Foundation: Startup Classroom Supplies

The Description

After completing Teach for America’s - 2017 Memphis Institute I will be responsible for my very own classroom! I can't wait to decorate and meet my students and their families. One of the biggest hurdles that students in high need schools face is a lack of the necessary materials that are needed daily. It makes it infinitely more difficult for students to take part in activities and classwork when they do not have basic supplies.

To get the year started off right, I will use the funds that I raise to purchase the startup supplies needed to welcome my students to a classroom that is clean and stocked full with materials. This will allow me to provide the required supplies to students that otherwise would not have them. I will also purchase copy paper to ensure that I can provide my students with high quality learning materials, whether that is exit tickets, independent activities, or homework. Thank you so much in advance for supporting me and my students at the beginning of this exciting journey.

PledgeCents allows me to keep whatever I raise, so anything you can contribute really will make a difference for my first year. I want to make a great impression and a lasting impact on my first group of students and letting them know that they have a community that supports them both near and far will definitely get us on the right track. Here is a complete list of the materials that your generous investment will help provide for the students of my very first classroom:

Tiggly offers physical manipulatives that interact with literacy, math, and creative thinking learning apps for students. This provides students with opportunity to engage in digital learning through developmentally appropriate technology. The Tiggly Thinker Kit combines one set of Tiggly Words and one set of Tiggly Digits.

Back Up Plan

If I do not meet my goal, I will purchase as many materials as possible. I will prioritize the materials that are most essential to students (pencils, paper, etc.) as they are the most important to ensuring that students can participate in daily lessons.

Dear Donors,

Thank you so much for your support! I am extremely excited to have finished my first week of Professional Development. With your help I will be able to purchase math manipulatives, books for our library, and general school supplies. I will continue to update you all with how my classroom is going and how my scholars are learning. With your help, my class (named George Washington University) of 33 first graders is one-step closer to success in college and beyond.

If you have any questions, comments, or concerns feel free to reach out via email at: ajm2013@gmail.com

Abbie (Ms. Martin)

Hope you're doing well and adjusting to my hometown! I know that you'll be a great teacher for your students. Make sure you get a snow cone from Jerry's Sno Cones (it's a summer time staple) and visit the breweries (Ghost River, Wiseacre, Memphis Made, High Cotton, and Meddlesome) whenever you have time!

About the Creator

I am excited to be a part of the TFA family and join the movement to solve education inequity in this country and provide all students with a quality education. I'm fortunate enough to be selected from a nationwide talent applicant pool to join a teacher corps comprised of leaders who commit a minimum of two years to teach in high need public schools. This summer I will be participating in an intensive skill and knowledge development program aiming to increase student achievement as well as a comprehensive professional development program including seminars, discussion groups, workshops, and content and professional learning communities specific to teaching license areas. I can't wait for my first year with Teach for America.
