"The more you read, the more things you know. The more that you learn, the more places you will go." - Dr. Seuss Success begins by turning the pages of a book. Literacy is a foundational skill for everything that we do in life. It is crucial that we instill a passion for literacy in every child.

My students are full of life, energetic eight and nine year olds.

Many come to school to find a safe-haven for learning more about the world outside of their bubble. Many of my students are visual and kinesthetic learners. They want to work in groups to explore new knowledge. Our school is considered a high-poverty school and has an elevated rate of reduced-price and free lunch students. Many of our students come from single parent homes and are not able to afford the luxury of technology. Even though our school has challenges, we have been able to rise above those challenges to experience success. We had a great rate of success in our state Literacy Promotion Act last school year and anticipate success this year. Reading and Literacy are high on our priority list. We often rotate our students in groups to ensure that each student is gaining access the information that they need to ensure success.

My Project

I am raising funds to purchase 8 additional Kindle fires so that ALL students can have one to one access to technology. Our class size is larger than our technology capability. If our classroom had access to eight additional Kindle Fires to use in the classroom, more students would have access to a wealth of reading material on an individual basis! Technology could be incorporated into lessons consistently. Students would be able to gain exposure to numerous types of literature using online resources as well as download books that represent their individual interests. Their love for technology would also increase their engagement in learning. In addition to a plethora of interesting reading material, students will be able to conduct research on topics being studied, use online tools, watch teacher-selected videos to write about, and utilize apps to enrich and/or remediate the learning experience. They will be able to learn in a manner that will help them experience success in the real world.

The more students read, the better they become! Reading is essential in all areas of life.Through reading, students increase their active vocabulary and understanding of the world around them.

These skills combined allow them to gain efficiency in life. Through your gift, you can touch the future of our children. I have the ability to gift them Internet access, if you can assist in placing a device in their hands to help them explore more reading material.
