With these funds I will... purchase 8 Kindle Fire tablets to use for interactive science games and to use to take Accelerated Reading tests.

My Students:

The mind is not a vessel to be filled, but a fire to be kindled. My students need opportunities to apply the knowledge that they have acquired through critical thinking activities.My students are full of life, energetic eight and nine year olds. Many come to school to find a safe-haven for learning more about the world outside of their bubble. Many of my students are visual and kinesthetic learners. They want to work in groups to explore new knowledge. Our school is considered a high-poverty school and has an elevated rate of reduced-price and free lunch students. Many of our students come from single parent homes and are not able to afford the luxury of technology. Even though our school has challenges, we have been able to rise above those challenges to experience success.

My Project:

I am requesting 8 Kindle fires so that more students can have tools to explore science interactively. If our classroom had access to eight additional Kindle Fires to use in the classroom, more students would have access to a wealth of scientific reading material on an individual basis and the capability to practice the concepts they have learned! Technology could be incorporated into lessons consistently. Their love for technology would also increase their engagement in learning. In addition to a plethora of interesting science reading material, students will be able to conduct research on topics being studied, use online tools, watch teacher-selected videos to write about, and utilize apps to enrich and/or remediate the learning experience. They will be able to learn in a manner that will help them experience success in the real world. Through hands-on interactive exploration, students increase their active scientific vocabulary and understanding of the scientific concepts. These skills combined allow them to gain efficiency in life.
