With these funds we will buy a class set of "The City of Ember" for our 3 classes to share.  Since we have over 30 kids in each class getting a class set of any one book is very difficult and with each book costing $6 (that is the cheapest I could find on Amazon including shipping) it can be very expensive.  The students really love reading the novels we have read so far and we feel that the reading novels is one of the best ways foster a love of reading. Over the course of the years, we read 2 novels; however, the books have become so damaged that they are almost unreadable.  Many of them have been read so many times that pages are falling out, spines are cracked almost or completely in half, and some have been read so many times that the glue that holds them together is melting.  We plan on using these books in several interdisciplinary lessons focusing on all aspects of literacy, from comprehension to informational and expository writing.
