The Description

My Project
My classroom is made up of twenty second graders. Over sixty percent of the students in my classroom are performing below grade level in reading. In order for my students to enhance their learning, I want to provide them the best education possible. By implementing an after-school tutoring program that would be cost free to parents, my students would be able to focus on improving their reading abilities with a smaller classroom setting.
This after-school tutoring program would allow my students to do a variety of things such as more one-on-one guided reading time, listen to e-books to improve their reading skills, take virtual field trips, as well as practice their writing and research skills. They will also be able to improve their reading skills at school since they may not have a parent at home to help them with homework after-school. With these funds I (and two other teachers) will be able to offer tutoring to about 15 students after-school who wouldn't be able to afford tutoring otherwise. Money shouldn’t be a deterrent in giving a student an education that he or she deserves.

Our elementary school in Jefferson City, MO is 62% free and reduced lunch.
Most of our students struggle academically because they simply do not have the resources at home or at school readily available to them. Even though many of my second grade students have very tough lives and have seen things I never even dreamed of seeing at the age of seven years old, every one of my students is a leader. They genuinely care about their classmates and other students in the school.

Donations to this project will help improve our classroom by giving the students more one-on-one time with their teacher to improve their reading skills and help prepare for the MAP test.
According to the 2016 MAP test, overall grades 3, 4, and 5 had 52% which was down from 54% in 2015. The iReady test also is shows us that 69% of students in second grade are below reading level, 48% of third graders, 71% of fourth graders, and 66% of fifth graders. This test is also shows that there is a major deficit in phonics.
If five of my students (and five students in two other 3rd-5th grade classes) had tutoring for two days after school, this would benefit them not only now by helping to improve their reading and writing scores on the MAP test, but it will also help build their confidence in literacy.

Back Up Plan

If we do not meet our goal, we will be able to have just one or two teachers tutor some students after school. Just simply having one or two teachers impacting some students will still make a huge difference in those student’s lives.
