The Description

My amazing group of Deaf 2nd graders has taken a special interest in helping people who are homeless this year. They have each donated a portion of their weekly classroom earnings (money they earn through our incentive program) to a fund to help a local shelter, but they now want to take it a step further, reaching out in a more personal way. With the funds you donate, our class will purchase items to fill care bags for homeless people in our community. They have already brainstormed a list of items they would like to put in the bags:

  • socks
  • hats
  • gloves
  • toothbrushes
  • toothpaste
  • handwarmers
  • lip balm
  • hand wipes
  • wash cloth
  • soap
  • shampoo
  • conditioner
  • granola bars
  • peanut butter crackers
  • tuna kits
  • bottled water

Students will shop for the items themselves, and we will purchase drawstring backpacks to hold the items and include personalized notes in each bag. We will then get in our school vans and deliver bags directly to people who are homeless who we see on the streets in our community. They are already extremely passionate about this project; they just need your help funding it! Thank you for considering making a donation!

Back Up Plan

If we do not reach our goal, we will make fewer care bags than we had originally planned. We will still deliver as many bags as we are able to make!

About the Creator

I am a 2nd grade teacher at Metro Deaf School, a charter school serving Deaf and Hard of Hearing students in the Minneapolis/St Paul area. I am passionate about providing authentic learning experiences, character and social skills development, and using technology in the classroom to give my students a voice. Many of my students have limited world knowledge due to lack of communication access. I work hard to bridge that knowledge and communication gap by giving them lots of opportunities to experience the world using visual learning and sign language.
