The Description
With these funds my students need a color laser printer, a case of paper, and 4 toner cartridges.
With the ever changing technology it is so important for our children to have the opportunity to learn how to use and embrace all aspects of technology.
The students in my fifth grade multi-culturally diverse classroom come from various backgrounds. Eighty percent of them are currently living in poverty. Many do not have Internet access at home. Computers, printers, and technology are only something they see in school.
Their peers in the surrounding suburbs of our city are at an advantage because they have the technology in their homes and at their fingertips. They complete their homework and email it to their teachers. My students do not have that advantage.
I try to keep them using technology as much as possible to give them an advantage.
Our classroom has 6 desktop computers and we are lucky enough to have a rolling cart of laptops that we can use as needed for various projects.
We recently completed a research project where the students were expected to type their final papers. This was a great learning process for many of them as they have never been required to do any type of word processing.
We encountered a problem when it was time to print the final papers. Our school only has 2 printer/copiers for over 50 teachers. With over 70 students attempting to print their final papers it became quite the headache. We ended up having most of the students hand write their final papers.
With the funding of this grant we could set up the printer in our classroom and allow the students to print directly to "their" printer.
Our next research project will be a project that requires them to research a modern day item from its start until today. Once they complete the research project they will be required to type it and print it out.
Then they will be expected to create an electronic brochure complete with pictures. Once completed they will also be able to print their work for display!
This grant will give our children the advantage that their peers already have!

Back Up Plan
If I do not meet my goal I will purchase... A less expensive laser printer (perhaps one that doesn't print in color) that way the laser printer cartridge will be less expensive. I would also purchase less paper.
