The Description

With these funds I will purchase iPads to increase accessibility to the curriculum materials as well as access to the multitude of language resources available through technology.  I would love to be able to provide my English Language Learners with resources that are fun, engaging and most importantly an asset to their language development. As I have continued to research new ways to present language learning to my students, I have increasingly come across resources that require technology.

The children who enter my classroom are bright and enthusiastic pre-teens from many different countries. They are students who are excited to learn about the world around them! However, most do not have access to the innumerable resources that can help them to explore the vast world outside of their urban community. It is my job as an educator of English Language Learners to provide my students with access to the language of their new home. The majority of the students that I teach have recently moved from a non-English speaking country. My students are living in a new place; going to a new school AND learning a new language (as if middle school wasn't hard enough!).

My goal is to provide each of my students with the ability to access the tools to assist them in their acquisition of a new language. One example of how we would use the iPads in the classroom is to access our curriculum resources. This year I have more students than textbooks. Without technology I will need to make copies of every reading and activity for each student. This of course, is not a very environmentally friendly way of running a classroom! In order to bring reading and writing to life in my classroom, students need to be able to interact with the text in multiple ways.

Back Up Plan

If I do not meet my goal I will purchase as many iPads as the funds will allow. If the funds are below the price of a single iPad I will use the funds to purchase iPad applications or a case for the current iPad we have in the classroom.

About the Creator

My middle school English Language Learners are mainly classified as low income and high need. Although that is who they are on paper, they are so, so, much more than those classifications. Most do not have access to the innumerable resources that can help them to explore the vast world outside of their urban community. I truly believe that it is my job as an educator to give them these experiences and guide them in exploring the world we live in, through teaching about the people, places and things that make up our world.
