The Description

Mr. Supra back again needing some help to provide the best resources for my students. Last year the IXL program proved to be instrumental in helping my students succeed in math, with a particular emphasis on the middle-achieving students, many of which improved from 2s to 3s on the CAASSP over the course of the school year. With IXL, I and other instructors in my classroom are able to deliver more tailored 1 on 1 instruction to struggling students, while the IXL program gives the middling and higher students an opportunity to teach themselves as each wrong answer is corrected with an explanation as to what is wrong and what to do next time. Students this year are even more excited for IXL, as I have incentivized getting 100 on the smartscore instead of 80 (the standard for grade level achievement), pushing students to master skills beyond where worksheets can challenge them. IXL is an instrumental part of my math instruction, so much that I have tailored my curriculum to follow IXL's order, as it touches on many foundational skills that many of my students lack.

This year, I hope to purchase IXL for both math and for english language arts. While last year IXL was used solely for math practice, this year I am hoping to use the ela sections of IXL specifically to assist kids who are struggling with foundational ela skills such as capitalization and punctuation. Many of my students are English learners and struggle with written English conventions, which punctures their ability to write coherently despite them having many great ideas. With the repeated practice and feedback of the IXL modules, these students will be able to practice and get into the habit of using commas properly, learning how to format letters, and other essential writing skills and life skills that will help them throughout school and beyond.

Back Up Plan

If we do not reach our goal I do intend on purchasing the license myself and just supplementing the remainder of the cost out of pocket. This program is essential to my instruction and the repeated practice (at their appropriate level) students get is crucial to them improving their skills, and making progress wherever they can. Having a smaller class this year has allowed me to be able to shoot for getting both subjects, but if I can't reach the full goal I will happily pay for both.

About the Creator

As a first year teacher working at a Title 1 school, I've been slapped in the face with many obstacles to overcome in my efforts of educating the inner city youths in my class. Still, its nothing compared to the struggles they face each and every day. Through pledgecents, I am hoping to bridge the gap between my class and those of other schools' in terms of availability of programs and access to materials.
