The Description

With these funds I will...

bring in a professional group of musicians called Alkali to provide a clinic as well as perform in a concert with my middle school students. The students would have the opportunity to learn advanced skills from these musicians such as, improvisation, stage presence, composition and much more.

The Alkali ensemble is a diverse US based ensemble comprised of highly trained concert soloists, many from ethnic backgrounds typically underrepresented in classical music. This is a wonderful opportunity for my students as the vast majority of them are also from diverse ethnic backgrounds that also are not yet strongly represented in the classical music world. The students we serve here at KIPP Sharpstown College Prep are, in large part, economically disadvantaged (93.7% in 2014). I know they will be able to connect with, and learn from these extremely high-level performers.

The musicians of Alakali will provide us with original arrangements of pop and classical music to perform, a clinic for all orchestra students and will perform alongside the students in a side-by-side concert.

If you would like to learn more about Alkali, and how they can help my students you can visit www.alkalimusic.com

Back Up Plan

If I do not meet my goal I will purchase...

More music for our ensemble to perform, more instruments so that less students are required to share instruments as well as speakers and sound equipment that would allow students to listen to recordings of their rehearsals and performances in the classroom.

About the Creator

My name is Lee Rivera. I teach the orchestra program at KIPP Sharpstown College Prep. The mission of our school is a very powerful one... to ensure that our students internalize the habits of self-reliance, honor, achievement, responsibility to others, and persistence in order to become life-long learners capable of excelling in college and committed to transforming tomorrow.

I teach string orchestra to fifth through eighth grade students. My main goal for my students is that they learn to become life-long music lovers, and are able to pass that love of music onto future generations. We value the fine arts very highly at our school. So much so, that each and every student is enrolled in one of our five fine arts classes (orchestra, choir, visual art, dance and theatre) for all four years they are here.

We work very hard to provide the students with a high quality arts education along side their rigorous study in the other content areas. With this in mind, I fully believe we help to make our students into well rounded and community conscience individuals who will become strong productive members of our society in the future.
