Guaranteeing the Basics

The Description

I will soon be embarking on my teaching journey in Indianapolis, IN. I will be joining the faculty at Emmerich Manual High School. I will be teaching Integrated Chemistry and Physics (ICP) and Environmental Science. I am preparing for both of these classes to be as hands on as possible and to help my students make connections to their everyday life! However, the unfortunate reality is that students often do not have the necessary materials to be successful, ranging from paper and pencil to other required classroom materials. My goal is to ensure the simple materials that may be unattainable for some students is not what inhibits them from engaging in real life science!

With these funds, I plan first to ensure every student has a binder that will stay in my classroom. This binder will be a place for them to keep all materials for my class and will serve as an interactive study tool for various assessments and projects.

I also will use these funds for various classroom supplies such as:

  • Classroom supply of pencils
  • Classroom supply of notebook paper
  • Classroom supply of hand sanitizer
  • Classroom supply of Kleenex
  • Classroom supply of Clorox wipes
  • Classroom supply of colored pencils/ markers (useful in Environmental Science cycle diagrams)
  • Several packs of Index cards (3x5)
  • Subscriptions to science publications geared towards high school students

Back Up Plan

If I do not reach my goal, I will prioritize the binders, wiring utensils, and notebook paper. I will try to replenish other supplies throughout the school year as needed.

About the Creator

I am beginning my teaching career at a charter school in Indianapolis, IN. A stark reality for most of my students, and students across the country, is that they simply do not come to school with the necessary materials to be successful. This ranges from pencils and paper to materials teachers require for their individual classrooms. I am setting this up to try to level that field for students in my classroom who may not be able to afford basic school supplies.
