The Description

With these funds I will obtain construction paper (variety of colors), index cards, crayons, paint, poster paper, and ziplock bags. School supplies are limited this year, and many of the students don't bring in the items on their grade's school supplies list. I like to include craft activities that go along with the lessons and content the students are learning to make the topics fun and engaging, especially for visual and hands on learners. The construction paper, paint, and poster paper will provide the materials needed to do craft activities as well as give the students options in how they would like to create and show their work. The index cards and ziplock bags would provide the students with take home materials. Because many of the students read below grade level and struggle with their grade specific sight words, students would be able to write their words on index cards and take them home in ziplock bags to practice at home with. Many of the students don't have crayons at home and we often run out of them in the class so extra sets of crayons would be beneficial for the students to be able to use and color when working on assignments and projects. The students deserve these materials because many of them can't afford them and they would help enrich classroom and homework activities.

Back Up Plan

If I do not meet my goal I will purchase the index cards, ziplock bags, and construction paper. I think the index cards and ziplock bags are essential as these will allow students to take home and practice sight words to increase their sight word knowledge and reading skills, which are especial in the primary grade levels. I will also purchase the construction paper as that would sill allow for creative projects and allow for activities that don't rely only on white paper or worksheets, but allow the students to use their creativity when doing their work and creating projects. The more engaging and fun the activities are, the more motivated the students are to participate and learn and with the younger children even just the idea choice and using colors is exciting.

About the Creator

I am an elementary kindergarten and first grade ESOL teacher in Maryland. The school that I service is a title 1 school and most children qualify for free or reduced lunch. I work to teach English, reading, and writing skills to children who's first language is not English. I also serve as the ESOL department chair at the school. My role as chair is to lead the ESOL department at my school and serve as a member of the instructional leadership team, helping to make school wide decisions to improve student learning and teacher instruction.
