The Description

The First Grade team is planning a wonderful event for our Expo in February.  Students will research how to be healthy and what truly are the NEEDS of people versus the wants.  We are going to have a three week unit during which students will have a Heart Healthy Valentine's Day as well as make and take care of pet rocks as though they were real pets!  Through this, students will realize that maybe the things they think they need to survive are truly not always necessary.  They will also learn first hand about taking care of something, and they will establish ownership of the project.

In this unit, the students will also be organizing a food drive to help people that don't have all the food they need!  Our first graders will not only learn firsthand about needs and wants, but they will be reaching out to and helping the community!

We are excited to have our students partake in this project!  We are asking for this money to provide 150 students with all the goods for the unit.  This includes rocks and the materials to personalize the rocks (googyl eyes, paint, felt, etc) as well as the thing necessary to create a shelter (bed) for the pet rock.

The students will present this project in our school's Expo in February.  They will be accountable for explaining what they've learned, as well as presenting their findings through this real life research experience.   This wil be a fantastic project that they are sure to remember for years to come!  Thank you for your help in making this possible!

Back Up Plan

If I do not meet my goal I will purchase however much of the materials we are able to!  We will then supplement the rest out of pocket.

About the Creator

My entire life has revolved around wanting to teach. I earned my BA in Hispanic Studies from Rice University with the intention of improving communication between my future students' families and myself. I then received my Masters in Elementary Education from Vanderbilt University. I may be paying student loans until I die, but I know that I have the best education possible helping me through my teaching career.

I have taught for 6 years, and I couldn't imagine a more fulfilling career. From 3rd grade to kindergarten, the love I have for my students is immeasurable. I would do anything for them and am constantly striving to improve myself as a teacher and their learning experience. I am excited to have found a new way to help them!
