Lets All Go to Letterland!

The Description

My classroom is filled with energetic kindergarten students. They are full of life and eager to learn. Our school is a Title-One school where all of our students receive free meals. Many of our students come from homes of limited means and resources. Our school also has many non-native English speaking students and families.

Each day we use our imaginations to travel to Letterland where all of our letters come to life! We love learning letter names, songs, stories and so much more! Letterland is a child-friendly program that teaches phonics using a multi-sensory approach, combining phonics and storytelling. For the past seven years Tweetsie Railroad has sponsored Letterland Days, which functions as a reward and celebration of North Carolina children's literary achievements. Reading assessment scores continue to climb in school districts utilizing Letterland.

This trip will cover our core literacy curriculum. All of our curriculum follows the Common Core Standards and many of these standards will be covered on our field trip. The Letterland phonics program builds students’ knowledge of print concepts, phonological awareness, phonics and word recognition and reading fluency. Not only will we cover literacy standards, but we will be covering math, social studies and science standards as well. We will integrate this experience in reading, writing, science, and social studies.

Most of my students would never have the chance to experience a meaningful educational trip like going to Letterland Day. Our literacy curriculum will come to life right before their eyes! Funding this opportunity will provide park admission for 25 kindergarten students as well as bus transportation. Students will get to ride the real Letterland train and meet all the Letterland characters they have been learning about all year. This field trip will be such a great learning opportunity for each of my students. Through participation in this learning experience, our students will be able to directly apply what they learn in the classroom to the real-world. By funding this project you will alleviate the financial burden that an experience like this can have on a family in a low income district.

Back Up Plan

If I do not meet my goal I will supplement the cost with out-of-pocket funds to ensure this experience is a reality for my students.
