Non-fiction comprehension and critical thinking skills are two of the most important components of building college-readiness in our students. With the onslaught of unreliable online media sources, it's important that students engage with accurate, timely news relevant o their lives and futures,

Newsela meets students where they are, offering content which automatically adjusts to a student's level of reading fluency, which makes it ideal for students of differing needs and current abilities. Further, a great deal of Newsela's content is available in Spanish, which makes it accessible to our English Learners as they acquire fluency in a new language.

Newsela offers wide-ranging content to support students in all areas of study, from history to financial literacy, the arts, current events, STEM and technology, as well as issues which are of high interest to middle and high school students, such as the risks of vaping and what they can do to become more involved in volunteerism.

As a teacher, I place such value on using Newsela's high-quality texts, quizzes, and writing prompts in daily instruction and as a launchpad for project-based learning, I took time over summer break to become a Newsela Certified Educator, which gives me the opportunity to offer suggestions and feedback on content and delivery methods which will make the resources offered even more accessible and meaningful to students. 

Finally, Newsela integrates seamlessly with classroom technology and can be used by students at home with the Chromebooks our district has provided to complete assignments, build background knowledge in virtually any subject, and to supplement their learning across content areas
