The Description

With these funds, I will be able to purchase a set of chromatic bass Joia tubes. Joia tubes are a versatile, orchestral sounding instrument that will open a broad avenue of opportunities for my students in the music room. The deep, sustained tones of the bass Joia tubes will provide the perfect sound for powerful, moving bass lines and rich, resonant harmonies. The visual, kinesthetic, and aural aspects of this instrument make them ideal for teaching the concept of harmony to students of all ages, as it allows them to see the different notes and chords being played, hear how the notes sound together in harmony, and play accompaniments to go with our classroom songs. All students are naturally creative and innovative when given the opportunity and means to succeed. The Joia tubes will provide students with a wonderful outlet for musical improvisation and composition by giving them a visual point of reference and allowing them to hear their music as they are writing it. This instrument would make a fabulous and educationally valuable addition to our instrumentarium and will directly benefit every student in our school, effectively enriching the musical education of over 350 students.

Back Up Plan

If we do not reach our entire goal, we will use the funds raised to purchase other much needed instruments for our music room, such as hand drums, xylophones, glockenspiels, and metallophones. We have many empty shelves looking to be stocked with new instruments for the students to play. The students love to enrich our classroom experiences with instruments and will be grateful for any addition to our instrumentarium, no matter how small.

About the Creator

Each week, over 350 students enter my classroom where we explore music through a variety of mediums, including speech, movement, singing and playing instruments. My students range in age from kindergarten through 5th grade and come to class in groups of 20-25 students at a time. My students come both from the comprehensive school program and the regional school program for students with emotional disabilities. They are all eager, energetic and enthusiastic to learn about and make music! Over the course of the school year, we learn about music throughout our five major units of study: Rhythm, Form, Melody, Timbre/Tone Color, and Harmony/Texture. There is never a dull moment in our classroom! Our room is spacious and welcoming, but still has many empty shelves looking to be stocked with instruments and supplies to enhance our musical experiences.
