The Description

With these funds I will...

purchase a class set of National Geographic Young Reader Books and National Geographic DVDs.

With these funds, USC scholars will be empowered to read, write and create projects about places, animals and people they otherwise may not be exposed to! The funds will directly impact USC 2nd grade scholars' opportunity to grow into well-rounded readers who discuss and understand how our Earth and the animals and people within it operate, change and interact.

A huge component of 2nd grade standards require scholars to read, analyze and critically think about informational text. National Geographic Young Reader Books and DVDs provide scholars with a fun, colorful and interactive exposure to non-fiction content ranging from animals (penguins, lizards, etc) to biographies (Nelson Mandela, MLK Jr., Amelia Earhart, etc).

USC scholars deserve these resources because they have worked relentlessly to grow as readers this year! They are now eager and hungry for more exposure to non-fiction text to expand their knowledge and prepare them for the challenges of 3rd grade non-fiction literary analysis. Not to mention, these National Geographic non-fiction readers and videos have high-interest topics that even the most disengaged 2nd grade readers will be instantly invested in reading and exploring the contents!

Thank you for supporting USC 2nd grade scholars and helping to provide us with the opportunity to expand our exposure to and knowledge through literacy!

Back Up Plan

If we do not meet our goal, we will reduce the number of non-fiction text 2nd grade USC scholars have access to read and learn from.

Not just anyone gets my money. I have to truly believe in the person. You are one of those people. Love you.

About the Creator

I am a lead 2nd grade teacher at KIPP Empower Academy in South Los Angeles. I attended Azusa Pacific University for my undergraduate degree and the University of Southern California (USC) for my Masters in the Art of Teaching.

I first fell in love with educating children while directing, tutoring and mentoring youth in the Skid Row community of Los Angeles. My drive to seek justice and equity in education for all children led to becoming a Teacher for America corps member in Miami-Dade in 2010.

While there, I received the Excellence in Teaching Award for elementary school teachers in my region for Teach for America. I am committed to advocating for our kids to receive an equitable, just and culturally-relevant education. I have experience teaching kindergarten, first grade and second grade.

I describe my role as an educator as one in which I “get to see miracles every day”.
