The Description

In Charlotte, North Carolina, upward mobility for children born into poverty is one of the lowest in the country. On paper, this means that students of the lowest-income households have little to no opportunities to increase their socioeconomic status as they grow up.

What this doesn't show, however, is the countless hours their families spend working, so that their children have the chance at a better future.

It doesn't show the resilience of each student as they face numerous challenges before they even get to school each morning. Despite growing racial tensions in our city, our families continue to persist, and do so with zest as a team and family.

As an interventionist, I work with students with additional obstacles standing in their way. It is my pleasure to support their individual needs, allowing them to access an excellent education, so that they may overcome and be better for it.

In our founding year, kindergarten and 4th grade students are creating a legacy of change within our school, within our city, and within our world.

Students with various needs will be using the weighted animals, Bouncy Bands for chairs, LEGOs, The Cuby, Kinetic Sand, and puzzles to satisfy students sensory needs.

The large 12.9 inch iPad will be used to satisfy visual and auditory needs in order to cater lessons towards individual students.

This will be used in the small group setting when delivering individualized instruction, helping them meet their grade level goals.

Overall, these materials will address each of the different learning styles: visual, musical/auditory, tactile, kinaesthetic, logical, social, and solitary.

Back Up Plan

If I do not meet my goal I will purchase...as many of the materials that donations will allow. Even the smallest donation will allow for one or more of these materials to be purchased, which would ensure that my students are able to express themselves in a variety of ways, learning in the process.

THANK YOU!

February 8, 2017

Thank you to all of those of you who donated to our project! Because of you, we were able to purchase almost ALL of the items from our wish list aside from the iPad. Students have already begun incorporating puzzles and sand activities into their day, and have enjoyed it so much! Others have utilized our weighted stuffed animals as a way to calm and focus their body, allowing them to focus on growing their brain! We are endlessly thankful that you had a heart for our school and students, and that you acted upon that to provide amazing resources that will help our students both in and outside of the classroom. I will post pictures of these resources in action soon!
