Building The Foundation: Startup Classroom Supplies
$551
$540 goal
The Description
After completing Teach for America’s - 2017 Dallas-fort-worth Institute I will be responsible for my very own classroom! I can't wait to decorate and meet my students and their families. One of the biggest hurdles that students in high need schools face is a lack of the necessary materials that are needed daily. It makes it infinitely more difficult for students to take part in activities and classwork when they do not have basic supplies.
To get the year started off right, I will use the funds that I raise to purchase the startup supplies needed to welcome my students to a classroom that is clean and stocked full with materials. This will allow me to provide the required supplies to students that otherwise would not have them. I will also purchase copy paper to ensure that I can provide my students with high quality learning materials, whether that is exit tickets, independent activities, or homework. Thank you so much in advance for supporting me and my students at the beginning of this exciting journey.
PledgeCents allows me to keep whatever I raise, so anything you can contribute really will make a difference for my first year. I want to make a great impression and a lasting impact on my first group of students and letting them know that they have a community that supports them both near and far will definitely get us on the right track. Boxes on Boxes
August 6, 2017
Hey y'all,
Yes, I just said ya'll. I think that means that I am officially a Texan. Last Wednesday, I got to visit my classroom at W.H. Gaston Middle School for the first time. I was surprised that they were willing to give a new teacher such a bright, cheery room. I'm looking forward to making it my own!
For now, I have boxes arriving daily (even on Sundays, thanks to Prime!) with supplies that I'll need for the 28th. I've ordered the basics - folders, pens, hand sanitizer, composition notebooks - but I've also picked a few choice items that I think my kiddos will love.
- I purchased a copy of Bravo!: Poems About Amazing Hispanics, by Margarita Engle, which is an anthology of poetry written by and for Spanish speaking young adults. Over 80% of the student population at Gaston identifies as LatinX and I want to ensure that my students have access to culturally relevant reading material.
- I also ordered a secondhand set of Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson & The Olympians books for our classroom library. This series is really popular with 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. If you're a lover of the classics, they're a fun weekend read for adults too!
As my classroom comes together, and I introduce my kiddos to the library that I've been crafting for them, thanks to your kindness, I will share more updates!
Best,
Hannah
