The Description

Read Acrosss America is an annual motivational program that encourages students to celebrate reading on March 2, which is Dr. Seuss's birthday, and represents a week of activities and special visitors.  The purpose of this celebration is to motivate students to read more.  Research has proven that children who read more, do better in school.

Funding will allow us to invite award winning authors to join our annual Read Across America celebration.  The funds will also enable us to purchase books for our students.  The Educational Testing Service reports \"that students who do more reading at home are better readers and have higher math scores; however, students read less for fun as they get older."  NEA's Read Across America's celebration is an amazing opportunity for all students to see how much fun reading can be! Authors are invited to share their love of reading and writing.  When children have the opportunity to see how reading connects to the real-world, it becomes more meaingful.

Over the past few years, award winning authors such as Stephanie Calmenson (www.stephaniecalmenson.com), Elizabeth Levy (www.elizabethlevy.com), Marilyn Singer (www.marilynsinger.net), Matt Novak (www.mattnovak.com) and Joanne Rocklin (www.joannerocklin.com) have shared their experiences with reading and writing with our students.  In addition,  local celebrities such as David Newell, from Mr. Roger's Neighborhood, (www.en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Newell) have also inspired and motivated our students to pick up a favorite book and read.

Our students work very hard throughout the school year and this celebration will be a great reward for the extra effort they put forth.  The funds will allow classroom teachers the flexibility to find books that are the appropriate level and meet the interests of their individual students.  Sites such as www.amazon.com and www.firstbook.org or specific author websites will be used for the purchases. This week long literacy celebration highlights the importance of reading in a memorable way.

Back Up Plan

If our goal is not reached, the funds will be used to purchase books for our classrooms.  Money can be dispersed equitably among grade levels. Classroom books can be used for small group instruction, Accelerated Reader tests or an author study.
