Super Spellers R Us

The Description

Our school is a K-5 school, that operates on a modified calendar (rather than a typical summer vacation, our students enjoy shorter breaks throughout the year. We refer to these breaks as extended learning. During extended learning, students partake in both remediation and enrichment classes.)

Enrollment (as of 9/2015): 749 students

  • African American: 39%
  • Asian/Pacific Islander and American Indian: 5%
  • Hispanic: 28%
  • White: 25%
  • Unspecified: 3%

With these funds I will purchase "My Dictionary and My Thesaurus" for my second students.  Second students are still learning the basics in reading and developing writing skills. At this time, the children do not have their own personal dictionary that they can record new words that they learn how to spell.  Having their own personal dictionary, each child will be able to broaden their own vocabulary, not rely on the teacher or classmates to spell words and the dictionary will have additional resources that each child can use during reading and writing each day.

The cost for each set (My Dictionary and My Thesaurus) is $7.00 per set. http://my-dictionary.com/?page_id=46

Back Up Plan

If I do not meet my goal I will purchase only the "My Dictionary" for each student so they will have a personal dictionary to use daily.  If I can't make my purchase, they I will have to create, print, collate and pay to have each dictionary bound using my own personal monies.

Thank you everyone that has invested in my project. The goal has been met! I am super excited to be able to bring the new resource for my students. My students can now have their own personal dictionaries and continue to become awesome writers! Thank you again for investing in my students education.

About the Creator

I am a second grade teacher in an urban school in the city of Alexandria, Virginia. The student population is 750+, with our students coming from all over the world. Samuel W. Tucker Elementary was the first school in Alexandria to become a modified calendar school. This means that rather than a typical summer vacation, our students enjoy shorter breaks throughout the year. We refer to these breaks as extended learning. During extended learning, students partake in both remediation and enrichment classes.
