Building a Foundation: Classroom Startup Supplies

The Description

After completing Teach for America’s - 2017 Phoenix Institute I will be responsible for my own classroom! One of the biggest hurdles that students face is a lack of the necessary materials that are needed daily. It makes it infinitely more difficult for students to take part in activities and classwork when they do not have basic supplies.

To get the year started off right, I will use the funds that I raise to purchase the startup supplies needed to welcome my students to a classroom that is clean and stocked with materials. By equipping my students with the materials necessary for them to fully engage in lessons, I am fostering an environment of care, encouragement, and organized motivation. Additionally, being that TFA serves low-income communities, supplies for students to take home and work with will be necessary.

PledgeCents allows me to keep whatever I raise, so anything you can contribute really will make a difference for my first year. I want to make a great impression and a lasting impact on my first group of students and letting them know that they have a community that supports them both near and far will definitely get us on the right track. Here is a complete list of the materials that your generous investment will help provide for the students of my very first

Back Up Plan

If I do not meet my goal, I will purchase as many materials as possible. I will prioritize the materials that are most essential to students (pencils, paper, etc.) as they are the most important to ensuring that students can participate in daily lessons.

About the Creator

Born and raised on the island of O'ahu, Hawai'i, I have long held the values of Aloha close to my heart. Despite being a low-income person of color, I had the privilege of receiving an education and becoming a first generation college graduate.
It is because of the opportunities I accessed, despite the obstacles around me, that I was able to pursue my passions. I strongly believe that all students should have such access - this involves disrupting the current education system. I am excited to be a part of the Teach For America family and join the movement to solve education inequity in this country. I'm fortunate enough to be selected from a nationwide talent applicant pool to join a teacher corps comprised of leaders who commit a minimum of two years to teach in high need public schools. This summer I will be participating in an intensive skill and knowledge development program aiming to increase student achievement as well as a comprehensive professional development program including seminars, discussion groups, workshops, and content and professional learning communities specific to teaching license areas. I am eager for the years to come, and the ripples to be made.
