Building The Foundation: Startup Classroom Supplies

The Description

After completing Teach for America’s - 2017 Phoenix Institute I will be responsible for my very own classroom! I can't wait to decorate and meet my students and their families. One of the biggest hurdles that students in high need schools face is a lack of the necessary materials that are needed daily. It makes it infinitely more difficult for students to take part in activities and classwork when they do not have basic supplies.

To get the year started off right, I will use the funds that I raise to purchase the startup supplies needed to welcome my students to a classroom that is clean and stocked full with materials. This will allow me to provide the required supplies to students that otherwise would not have them. I will also purchase copy paper to ensure that I can provide my students with high quality learning materials, whether that is exit tickets, independent activities, or homework. Thank you so much in advance for supporting me and my students at the beginning of this exciting journey.

PledgeCents allows me to keep whatever I raise, so anything you can contribute really will make a difference for my first year. I want to make a great impression and a lasting impact on my first group of students and letting them know that they have a community that supports them both near and far will definitely get us on the right track. Here is a complete list of the materials that your generous investment will help provide for the students of my very first classroom:

Tiggly offers physical manipulatives that interact with literacy, math, and creative thinking learning apps for students. This provides students with opportunity to engage in digital learning through developmentally appropriate technology. The Tiggly Thinker Kit combines one set of Tiggly Words and one set of Tiggly Digits.

Back Up Plan

If I do not meet my goal, I will purchase as many materials as possible. I will prioritize the materials that are most essential to students (pencils, paper, etc.) as they are the most important to ensuring that students can participate in daily lessons.

...aaaand we're off!

August 15, 2017

Dear donors, supporters, friends, family, generous givers!

Today was day two of school. I can't believe it has already begun! Last week was taken up with many hours of classroom setup. I was ordering supplies, organizing materials, making decision after decision on where things go, how to make the classroom look good but be functional, reorganizing to maximize student success, etc, etc. This was all mixed with meetings where I learned of school procedures (sometimes LACK of school procedures), system wide business, curriculum requirements, lesson planning, and so on. If you are a teacher, I am sure you understand how this week went. I was exhausted.  Luckily, my mother was able to meet me out here for a few days and used her almost magical organization and vision skills to help me get set up. But, friends, let me say...an overarching emotion I felt was gratitude for the support that you have given me during this time. Spending more money on making my classroom the space it needs to be for the success of my students was one less thing I had to worry about during this stressful time. From the bottom of my heart, thank you.

So my classroom was "set up" by Saturday. School started Monday. Now, two days in and...I already love my students. They are caring and compassionate (one student teared up when he described his concern for his young brother, who is attending school for the first time and felt sad). They are hilarious and joyful, making me genuinely laugh every hour at least. They are creative and honest, sharing parts of themselves already that are deep and meaningful. I have noticed some growth opportunities in many of their academic work, especially writing and reading, however I have every confidence in them that they will improve so much this year! I feel so much anticipation and excitement for where they can go! My students' parents are also wonderful. They have already shown me kindness and welcomed me into their lives.

Once again, I thank you. Without your support, I would not be able to provide these incredible students with such a well-equipped classroom. They are so lucky, and I am so grateful for your generosity.

I am attaching a few pictures of the classroom on here! I'm not able to take pictures of the students without permission from parents, but just know that they are a beautiful group!

Love,

Cori

About the Creator

I am excited to be a part of the TFA family and join the movement to solve education inequity in this country and provide all students with a quality education. I'm fortunate enough to be selected from a nationwide talent applicant pool to join a teacher corps comprised of leaders who commit a minimum of two years to teach in high need public schools. This summer I will be participating in an intensive skill and knowledge development program aiming to increase student achievement as well as a comprehensive professional development program including seminars, discussion groups, workshops, and content and professional learning communities specific to teaching license areas. I can't wait for my first year with Teach for America.
