STEM Activities Using Technology

The Description

With these funds I will purchase equipment that will support STEM activities throughout the school.  Lego makes kits that allow children to build and program robots.  These projects require a great deal of problem-solving and cooperative learning skills in addition to the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math skills already embedded.  With this technology, I would like to start an after-school program that focuses on STEM activities.

Shreve Island is a school that focuses it's curriculum on the 'Leader in Me'.  In other words, our students learn to become leaders of themselves.  Through this program our students learn that each of them is a leader in a different area.  One student may be a leader in music, while another may discover they are a leader in reading.  Our school has opportunities for students who are leaders in athletics, academics, art, and music.  However, we are lacking in ways to help students discover their leadership potential in skills such as engineering and science.  My students need and crave ways to succeed and lead others.  As their teacher, it is my job to create these opportunities for them.  It is for these reasons that my students deserve these resources.  Every child deserves an opportunity to discover their strengths and potential.

The kits I would like to purchase can be found at this website, http://www.lego.com/en-us/mindstorms/?domainredir=mindstorms.lego.com.  I would like to purchase 5 kits for $350.00 each.

Back Up Plan

If I do not meet my goal I will purchase fewer kits with the money I have raised.

Ozobots

November 3, 2015

Since I did not raise enough money to purchase the Lego Mindstorms Kits.  I chose to purchase an Ozobot instead.  Ozobots are tiny programmable robots. They can be programmed with a drag and drop code or using color sequences on paper.  They are very versatile and perfect for my fourth and fifth graders.  our, but with these funds we were able to purchase another one.  Some of my classes have 32 students so any additional robots are very helpful.  I appreciate all the investors who donated their money towards this cause.  Thank you very much for considering my students' needs.

About the Creator

I work in an elementary school in an iPad Lab (like a computer lab but with iPads). I teach every student in my school in grades K-5. In other words, I serve over 700 students per week. In this role, I teach my students classroom skills, but extend their knowledge using technology. Additionally, I pride myself in introducing all my students to computer programming (even my kindergartners) and teaching them about digital citizenship.
Teaching and training teachers in the use of technology and iPads both in my school and in the surrounding states through workshops extends my ability to influence professionals and their students.
