Building The Foundation: Startup Classroom Supplies

The Description

After completing Teach for America’s - 2017 Phoenix Institute I will be responsible for my very own classroom! I can't wait to decorate and meet my students and their families. One of the biggest hurdles that students in high need schools face is a lack of the necessary materials that are needed daily. It makes it infinitely more difficult for students to take part in activities and classwork when they do not have basic supplies.

To get the year started off right, I will use the funds that I raise to purchase the startup supplies needed to welcome my students to a classroom that is clean and stocked full with materials. This will allow me to provide the required supplies to students that otherwise would not have them. I will also purchase copy paper to ensure that I can provide my students with high quality learning materials, whether that is exit tickets, independent activities, or homework. Thank you so much in advance for supporting me and my students at the beginning of this exciting journey.

PledgeCents allows me to keep whatever I raise, so anything you can contribute really will make a difference for my first year. I want to make a great impression and a lasting impact on my first group of students and letting them know that they have a community that supports them both near and far will definitely get us on the right track. Here is a complete list of the materials that your generous investment will help provide for the students of my very first classroom:

Tiggly offers physical manipulatives that interact with literacy, math, and creative thinking learning apps for students. This provides students with opportunity to engage in digital learning through developmentally appropriate technology. The Tiggly Thinker Kit combines one set of Tiggly Words and one set of Tiggly Digits.

Back Up Plan

If I do not meet my goal, I will purchase as many materials as possible. I will prioritize the materials that are most essential to students (pencils, paper, etc.) as they are the most important to ensuring that students can participate in daily lessons.

Finally Used All of the Funds!

August 26, 2017

Again, before I continue, THANK YOU! With this fundraiser I have been able to stock my classroom with supplies and tools that will help my students be successful in this class!

I finally used the last of the funds and thought I'd give you guys an update on everything your beyond generous donation was able to allow me to give my classroom and students!

  • Paper Easel Pads: for students to work together on problems, create posters, and anything else some giant paper could be used for in my math class!
  • Compartment organizer: to organize the different papers and resources my students may need during class so they have easy and non disruptive access
  • Extension cords, HDMI cable, audio cable: to bring my ~old~ classroom into the 21st century!
  • Colored pencils: for students to show their creativity, color code notes, and make our classroom a more nurturing and welcoming environment!
  • Magnetic timers: to keep my students in a structure, safe, predictable environment!
  • Block bulletin board letters:
  • Individual dry erase boards: to not only allow students to engage in whole class problem solving, but also to have a environmentally friendly replacement to scratch paper!
  • Dry erase markers and felt erasers: for my students to use with their boards, and for us to use on the classroom whiteboards!
  • Multiplication and Division flashcards and bingo: to help my students maintain and grow their abilities with basic math facts, in standard and more interactive ways!
  • Scissors: so students can all have access to their own scissors during class time and not have to bring in their own or borrow from peers!
  • Metal compasses: a durable tool that students will be able to utilize during our time in geometry class!
  • Protactors: for students to use during our time exploring angles and circles in our geometry class!
  • Rulers: for the obvious reasons, and will be used over and over again in our classroom!
  • Pencils, pens, highlighters: so students in the low income community I serve can rely on having the tools they need to learn
  • Index cards: for Exit Tickets, studying key vocabulary, and just a great tool to have in the classroom!
  • Sharpie Poster Markers: to use on our easel paper!
  • Stapler, staples, and 3 hole punch: to keep student's papers organized and able to be kept in a 3-ring binder!
  • Pencil sharpener: so that all our pencils can be put to good use!
  • Clorox wipes, broom: so that our classroom stays a clean, safe environment for my students to learn in!

I'm sure I'm missing a few little things you've been able to help me with (like the erasers I just thought about!), but I just wanted you all to know all of the difference you have made in my student's (and my own!) lives!

THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Setting Up the Classroom

August 21, 2017

Hello!

Before I say anything else, I just want to say thank you again for your generous donation/investment to my classroom! I am so appreciative of what you've been able to help me set up just the first days of school!

With your investments I have been able to purchase things like lap whiteboards, whiteboard markers, rulers, pencils, pens, pencil sharpener, hand sanitizer, cleaning supplies, anchor chart paper, chart paper markers, index cards, and I haven't even used the entirety of the funds yet! I want to hold onto to some as the school year goes on and see what else it is that my students really need.

So again, from the bottom of my heart, thank you for everything you've done for my students and my classroom!

Gratefully and sincerely,

Danielle Woolcott

About the Creator

I am excited to be a part of the TFA family and join the movement to solve education inequity in this country and provide all students with a quality education. I'm fortunate enough to be selected from a nationwide talent applicant pool to join a teacher corps comprised of leaders who commit a minimum of two years to teach in high need public schools. This summer I will be participating in an intensive skill and knowledge development program aiming to increase student achievement as well as a comprehensive professional development program including seminars, discussion groups, workshops, and content and professional learning communities specific to teaching license areas. I can't wait for my first year with Teach for America.
