Building The Foundation: Startup Classroom Supplies

The Description

After completing Teach for America’s - 2017 Delta Institute I will be responsible for my very own classroom! I can't wait to decorate and meet my students and their families. One of the biggest hurdles that students in high need schools face is a lack of the necessary materials that are needed daily. It makes it infinitely more difficult for students to take part in activities and classwork when they do not have basic supplies.

To get the year started off right, I will use the funds that I raise to purchase the startup supplies needed to welcome my students to a classroom that is clean and stocked full with materials. This will allow me to provide the required supplies to students that otherwise would not have them. I will also purchase copy paper to ensure that I can provide my students with high quality learning materials, whether that is exit tickets, independent activities, or homework. Thank you so much in advance for supporting me and my students at the beginning of this exciting journey.

PledgeCents allows me to keep whatever I raise, so anything you can contribute really will make a difference for my first year. I want to make a great impression and a lasting impact on my first group of students and letting them know that they have a community that supports them both near and far will definitely get us on the right track. Here is a complete list of the materials that your generous investment will help provide for the students of my very first classroom:

Tiggly offers physical manipulatives that interact with literacy, math, and creative thinking learning apps for students. This provides students with opportunity to engage in digital learning through developmentally appropriate technology. The Tiggly Thinker Kit combines one set of Tiggly Words and one set of Tiggly Digits.

Back Up Plan

If I do not meet my goal, I will purchase as many materials as possible. I will prioritize the materials that are most essential to students (pencils, paper, etc.) as they are the most important to ensuring that students can participate in daily lessons.

¡Dos semanas más! Two more weeks!

Hello friends and family!

It's crunch time here in Greenville, MS! I've finally moved to my new home, and am diligently preparing for my classroom. My role at T.L. Weston Middle School will stretch beyond my role as a Spanish teacher. I hope to help with extracurriculars and building up our school library. The library is sparse, to be generous. Most of the reference books are outdated a few decades, and reading books span readings levels that don't correspond with the grade levels being taught. On the other hand, our school is working tirelessly to provide our students with updated technology resources and elective curriculum options. I am no particular fan of Facebook spam fundraisers. However, this project will impact over 100 students and means a great deal to me and my new community. The hospitality of the South is what you see in movies and then some. The people here know TFA, and have welcomed us with open arms to join them to improve the education for our students.

If Pledge Cents isn't your preferred method of giving you may give through Venmo or ChaseQuickPay. maryjoanevans@gmail.com

Much love to all!

One Month to GO!

July 10, 2017

Greetings from the Delta!

As you may know, I am in the process of preparing for my first year of teaching middle school Spanish through Teach For America. I have been matched with TL Weston Middle School in Greenville, MS. Greenville is a mid-sized community with a lot of character and southern hospitality. If I've had the pleasure to catch up with you over the past couple of weeks you know that teaching summer school has been an amazingly fun challenge. My 2nd and 3rd graders are so curious about Spanish, and they challenge my teaching each and every day. Despite the rough days and long lesson planning, I am confident that I am in the right place in the world, doing the thing I am meant to be at this time in my life.

Grade school in Mississippi is not what I had the privilege of experiencing in Chicago. There are many factors that create this complicated education culture. However, a little love and a lot of learning will go a long way to provide these students with the same opportunities I have been afforded.

Speaking of affording things...setting up a classroom is no easy task. I am in awe of the amazing spaces I have learned in my entire life, and the effort my educators have put forth to create those safe learning environments. To that end, I would like to ask for your help. $5 helps me purchase or create posters, a month's worth of pencils, or a book for the class biblioteca (library). Any small bit counts. Whatever I am unable to raise will come out of my pocket. I believe in my students, though I have yet to meet them. Todo es posible. All is possible.

About the Creator

I am excited to be a part of the TFA family and join the movement to solve education inequity in this country and provide all students with a quality education. I'm fortunate enough to be selected from a nationwide talent applicant pool to join a teacher corps comprised of leaders who commit a minimum of two years to teach in high need public schools. This summer I will be participating in an intensive skill and knowledge development program aiming to increase student achievement as well as a comprehensive professional development program including seminars, discussion groups, workshops, and content and professional learning communities specific to teaching license areas. I can't wait for my first year with Teach for America.
