Building The Foundation: Startup Classroom Supplies

The Description

After completing Teach for America’s - 2019 Philadelphia Institute I will be responsible for my very own classroom! I can't wait to decorate and meet my students and their families. One of the biggest hurdles that students in high need schools face is a lack of the necessary materials that are needed daily. It makes it infinitely more difficult for students to take part in activities and classwork when they do not have basic supplies.

To get the year started off right, I will use the funds that I raise to purchase the startup supplies needed to welcome my students to a classroom that is clean and stocked full with materials. This will allow me to provide the required supplies to students that otherwise would not have them. I will also purchase copy paper to ensure that I can provide my students with high quality learning materials, whether that is exit tickets, independent activities, or homework. Thank you so much in advance for supporting me and my students at the beginning of this exciting journey.

Every dollar I receive will be put towards classroom supplies so anything you can contribute really will make a difference for my first year. I want to make a great impression and a lasting impact on my first group of students and letting them know that they have a community that supports them both near and far will definitely get us on the right track. Here is a complete list of the materials that your generous investment will help provide for the students of my very first classroom:

Back Up Plan

If I do not meet my goal, I will purchase as many materials as possible. I will prioritize the materials that are most essential to students (pencils, paper, etc.) as they are the most important to ensuring that students can participate in daily lessons.

Classroom Startup Goals!

June 24, 2019

Hello friends and family,

I hope that everyone is doing well. As many of you know I have recently graduated Rutgers and since then I have happily begun my commitment with Teach for America Greater Philadelphia where I will be teaching 7th-8th Grade English Language Arts (ELA). Throughout these next few weeks I will also be teaching 9th grade ELA with my summer school placement and I am so excited.
As preparation for my time in the classroom I want to make sure that I am providing my students with the best possible resources and environment. In order to do so I am asking for monetary donations that’ll go towards the start up of my very first classroom this Fall!
As a recent college graduate and first-generation low-income student the reality is that I cannot fully afford all the expenses that come with setting up an exciting, welcoming, and engaging space. Some of my plans for the classroom include starting a culturally relevant library the includes works from authors of color, purchasing art work that represents activism and issues facing our society today, and I also have plans of starting a small food pantry within my classroom in order to make sure that my students ALWAYS have access to food and never start the day or end the day hungry. Some of my other plans include starting a small hygiene closet that will include feminine hygiene products, deodorant and other similar items.
I completely understand that everyone may not be able to monetarily support this project, so if you would like to coordinate a way to donate books/non-perishable foods/etc please PM me so we can figure something out! Please feel free to share this with your networks and thank you for all your support.

(P.S: The current breakdown of items is pre-determined, so it is just there to give you an idea of how expenses can be broken up but I will be spending all money fundraised differently!)

About the Creator

I am excited to be a part of the TFA family and join the movement to solve education inequity in this country and provide all students with a quality education. I'm fortunate enough to be selected from a nationwide talent applicant pool to join a teacher corps comprised of leaders who commit a minimum of two years to teach in high need public schools. This summer I will be participating in an intensive skill and knowledge development program aiming to increase student achievement as well as a comprehensive professional development program including seminars, discussion groups, workshops, and content and professional learning communities specific to teaching license areas. I can't wait for my first year with Teach for America.
