Green Street Academy Band: Repairs & Supplies

The Description

This year, I am starting Green Street Academy's first ever instrumental band program. I have started by teaching my 7th grade general music students body percussion, bucket drumming, recorders, how to read music, and elements of various genres of music from Baroque to west African drumming to American blues.

The next step is to build on these skills by offering students the opportunity to play wind and percussion instruments. We are well on our way with collecting donations (since August, we have collected 4 flutes, 5 clarinets, 6 saxophones, 5 trumpets, 4 trombones, a piano, a drum set, and miscellaneous percussion instruments), but many of these instruments need minor repairs, accessories (reeds, mouthpieces, etc.), and method books. This fundraiser will help pay for those repairs and supplies so my students can continue to feel success, build confidence, and feel emotionally supported in a new and exciting way.

Back Up Plan

Whatever funds are raised will be used towards repairing instruments, purchasing reeds and accessories, and purchasing method books to help my students learn their instrument.

Reached our goal early!!

December 12, 2016

Due to overwhelming support, the GSA band has surpassed our goal 2 weeks earlier than the original deadline! The fundraiser will stay open through Friday for any last minute donations, but thanks to everyone's support we will be able to get the funds a little early and place orders for supplies before winter break. All are welcome to attend our Winter Fine Arts Night next Wednesday, December 21 @ 6:00 (doors open at 5:30) at Green Street Academy to see our students in action!

About the Creator

I have been teaching in Baltimore City for 4 years. For my first 3 years, I taught 7/8th grade math, coached our middle school track team, served as the 8th grade team leader for a year, and organized the 8th grade field trips and activities. I then moved to Greet Street Academy where I started a brand new instrumental music and band program. I am excited to give more students the opportunity to play instruments as our program continues to grow this year. I hope that giving kids access and exposure to as many diverse opportunities as possible will spark their interest in the world around them.
