Lissas Classroom Library: Inspiring a Love for Reading in the Mississippi Delta

The Description

After completing Teach for America’s 2017 Institute, I will start my first year teaching High School English in Greenville, Mississippi. I can’t tell you how excited I am to start! Through all my training, I have become extremely passionate about the importance of reading. My goal as a teacher is to help my students develop a lifelong love for reading, for “the best predictor of reading achievement is the amount of time children spend reading books on their own.

Because of this, I am starting to develop a classroom library. My goal is to provide a wide variety of books for my students to choose from. Finding books that interest and excite students is the first step in developing lifelong readers. Any donation you can make would be greatly appreciated and only used to buy affordable books for my students. Also, if you have old books that you want to get rid of, message me for my address and send books from your house to mine.

Back Up Plan

If I do not meet my goal, I will purchase as books as possible with the funds available.

About the Creator

I am excited to be a part of the TFA family and join the movement to solve education inequity in this country and provide all students with a quality education. I'm fortunate enough to be selected from a nationwide talent applicant pool to join a teacher corps comprised of leaders who commit a minimum of two years to teach in high need public schools. This summer I will be participating in an intensive skill and knowledge development program aiming to increase student achievement as well as a comprehensive professional development program including seminars, discussion groups, workshops, and content and professional learning communities specific to teaching license areas. I can't wait for my first year with Teach for America.
