First Year Classroom

The Description

On average a teacher spends $500 of their personal money on supplies and 1 in 10 spend over $1,000.

This time next week (8/6) I will start my first-year teaching English as a Second Language at Cordova High School in Memphis, Tennessee. I am excited to meet my students and get to work! However, as a first-year teacher there are many things that I need in order to get my classroom up and running. I want to provide my students with basic necessities to ensure they don’t have to worry about materials and can focus on their school work. I would like to be able to contribute my own money to my room but because of my training, I have been unable to work for 2 months.

All the money I raise will go to buying school supplies for my students (plus $10 to cover credit card fees). Below you will find my wish list. It is organized based on need (highest priority at the top). My biggest need is a white board. My classroom is a small annex and does not have a white board or chalk board so at the moment I don’t have anything to write on.

Thank you all for your support!

Back Up Plan

If I don't get the funds I need then I will have to start purchasing these items with my own money.

About the Creator

I am a first year teacher with Teach For America. I will be teaching ESL to 9th and 11th graders at Cordova High School in Memphis, TN. I believe that every child deserves a choice. No child should say "I can't go to college because...(money, grades, background). All children should be given an education that sets them up so when they are graduating from high school they can go to college, technology school or enter the work force. The key is that they are set up to make that choice.
