The Description

This year I am hoping to take my math classes to the next level with Mathalicious. It’s no secret that a lot of students get frustrated with math. Too often, it can feel rote and totally disconnected from their lives. Mathalicious is a resource that takes the world around us and turns it into dynamic, relevant, timely lessons that really engage students and help them to make connections beyond the worksheets.

With Mathalicious, my students will explore the math behind real-world topics, from sports to shopping to the odds of finding life on other planets. These lessons generate incredible math conversations and students often share insights -- mathematical insights -- they didn't realize they had! Mathalicious lessons really help me to foster a classroom culture of curiosity and rigorous mathematical thinking, in a way that is downright fun and interesting.

About the Creator

I adopt and adapt all sorts of best practices, independent of bandwagons and jargon, to do what is best of the kids I have in the moments I have them. I try to grow thinkers and learners and problem solvers, and I try to do it with kindness, empathy, a little sarcasm, creativity, some hustle, and a whole lot of passion. Too many kids dislike math. They think they are bad at it, that they can't do it, and it wears on them. I work hard every day to help math math come to life, in big and little ways, to make it less intimidating, less overwhelming, and even if kids still walk away not loving it, I do my best to help them build confidence that will carry with them beyond our classroom. I've been teaching since 2000 in a number of schools in a number of states, and no matter where I am, no matter the size of the school, its demographics, its successes or its struggles, the kids are always incredible -- and that is why I continue to do what I do.
