Flexible Seating to Foster a Love of Learning

The Description

With your help, I will promote autonomy and student ownership of learning through flexible seating. My 3rd grade students at Ojo Amarillo Elementary in Fruitland, NM deserve to work and learn in a classroom that is nurturing and promotes self motivation. Although flexible seating is a fairly new concept in the United States, research in the U.K(http://www.salford.ac.uk/cleverclassrooms/1503-Salford-Uni-Report-DIGITAL.pdf) has confirmed what educators already know- student are more motivated and engaged in the learning process when they are given choices and learn in a physically comfortable environment. For my classroom I plan to buy a variety of items to offer work spaces to my students other than tables. With you donations I will be purchasing wobble cushions, scoop floor rockers, cushioned reclinable reading/meditation seats, and a kid sized couch designed for schools.

At Ojo Amarillo 99% of students live below the poverty line and receive free school lunch. Please donate to my fundraiser to show my students they deserve to learn in a classroom that supports them as 21st century learners.

Back Up Plan

If we do not reach our goal I will purchase as many seating items as possible. This fundraising platform suggests I only request 75% of my needed cost, so that I may meet a realistic goal. If your donations surpass the $645 goal, I will be able to purchase more flexible seating (it would take $925 to ensure every student has a flexible seating option).

Our Goal has been met!

August 11, 2018

Thank you everyone who has contributed to my classroom. In just 9 days we were able to reach the initial goal of $645. As I described in the original back up plan, PledgeCents encourages fundraisers to only ask for 75% of their goal. In order for every child in my classroom to have a flexible seating option, we need a donation of $925. If you haven't had a chance to donate yet, please do so. If you have already donated, THANK YOU.

About the Creator

I am excited to be a part of the TFA family and join the movement to solve education inequity in this country and provide all students with a quality education. I'm fortunate enough to be selected from a nationwide talent applicant pool to join a teacher corps comprised of leaders who commit a minimum of two years to teach in high need public schools. This summer I will be participating in an intensive skill and knowledge development program aiming to increase student achievement as well as a comprehensive professional development program including seminars, discussion groups, workshops, and content and professional learning communities specific to teaching license areas. I can't wait for my first year with Teach for America.
