The Description
Freedom Preparatory Academy is a k-12 expanding charter school with an emphasis on college and career readiness. Our elementary school has been in existence since 2003, however, the expansion to include a secondary school began in 2006. Additional grade levels were added progressively until we included the 12th grade during the academic 2015-16 school year. Because of our continual growth over the past six years, we have struggled to secure the needed resources to meet the demands of our expanding school.
The vision statement of our school is: "To provide students with the skills imperative for university and career readiness. We will deliver a rigorous curriculum that emphasizes 21st Century skills of communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity. School-wide embedded programs with caring innovative, professional teachers, and visionary supportive leadership are essential components of our objective."
In alignment with our vision, a Chromebook lab will allow us to provide our students with the opportunity to learn imperative 21st Century skills that will prepare them for success in their university and career choices. A Chromebook lab would be an essential part of our embedded technology programs supported by innovative and caring teachers.
The Learning Management System that we are currently using is called Schoology. This platform requires that students have access to computers so they can see and use the technology resources provided by their teachers. They also complete and submit their school work on this platform. Without consistent exposure to technology, students will not have the technological literacy they need.
With our limited resources, we have been able to provide our high school (9-12) students with the basic technology in order to be successful with their course requirements on Schoology. However, our middle school (6-8) students have only one mobile computer lab to share among 200 students. This is out of alignment with our school vision, and limits our student's ability to become familiar with the technology they need to be successful in high school and beyond. There is a frustration for both middle school teachers and students because they are still required to use the Schoology technology platform, but they have an extremely limited ability to do so.
Beyond the vision to teach our students 21st Century skills, Freedom Preparatory Academy is committed to teach our students digital citizenship. We want our students to be responsible, contributing members of the digital community and Chromebooks will be a valuable tool to teach those skills and characteristics.
Furthermore, Freedom Preparatory Academy is a Title I school with approximately one third of our students in minority groups. A high percentage of our minority students are Hispanic. Many of our students are or will be first generation graduates. As a charter school in the state of Utah, we have always had to do more with less. Despite this being the case, we have been designated as a High Performing Title I School in the state of Utah, for the past three years.
In order to meet our school vision, provide our middle school students with better access to Schoology, and continue our tradition of high performance, we need to purchase 30 Lenovo N22 Chromebooks from STS School TechSupply. In order to manage these Chromebooks in our school, it is necessary to purchase 30 Google Chrome Management Console, Education Perpetual License. The individual cost per Chromebook is $179 with an additional cost of $28 for the licences. The quote we received can be seen HERE. A picture of the Lenovo N22 Chromebook can be seen HERE.
Back Up Plan
If I do not meet my goal I will purchase as many chrome books as possible. Any additional laptops would be better than what we currently have to use. :)
