The Description

This year I want to take my math class to the next level with Mathalicious. It’s no secret that a lot of students hate math. To them, math is just a bunch of random skills to memorize and regurgitate, and they see math class as totally disconnected from their lives. When students see no reason to learn, they don’t.

That’s why through Mathalicious my students will explore the math behind real-world topics, from sports to shopping to the odds of finding life on other planets. These lessons allow me and my students in a position to have interesting conversations that foster a classroom culture of curiosity and rigorous mathematical thinking.

This is where you come in! Your generous donation will get me one step closer to being able to provide these amazing features to my students.

Here is the breakdown in cost for fundraising for Mathalicious

  • Mathalicious - $320.00
  • Preferred Partner Program (10%) - $39.10
  • PledgeCents Platform Fee (5%) - $19.55
  • Processing Fee (3%) - $11.73
  • Total - $391.00 (rounded up to the nearest dollar)

Back Up Plan

If I do not meet my goal, with any beginning funds, I will purchase other math curriculum and teaching materials such as "The Classroom Chef" by John Stevens and Matt Vaudrey ($25), "Math on the Move" by Maike Rosenfeld ($23.50), and "Which One Doesn't Belong?" by Christopher Danielson ($25). If I can get assistance with about half my goal, however, I anticipate that I will be able to obtain help from my Parent-Teacher-Student Association for the rest.

About the Creator

When I was in middle school, I wanted to be a mathematician, an author, or someone who worked for NASA -- not as a glamorous astronaut, but as a person in Mission Control solving the hard problems so the astronauts could explore for all of us. I never did become any of those things, exactly, and yet I sort of did. I've been drawn to writing over and over through my life; I've enjoyed doing years of math as a scientist, parent, and teacher; and now I am basically doing Mission Control to help kids explore math and achieve for all of us and our future.

I teach sixth grade math at da Vinci Arts Middle School, a focus option public school in Portland, Oregon. Previously, I've taught math to students in sixth through twelfth grades and physical science to seventh and ninth graders. Teaching is my second workplace career, following my previous experiences as a technical and grant proposal writer for a chemistry software company and a stay-at-home parent to my two sons. I was a math and chemistry double major at Swarthmore College, have a master's degree in Physical Chemistry from Columbia University, and got my teaching degree with an Advanced Math endorsement from Lewis & Clark in 2009, adding a Chemistry endorsement in 2011. I believe passionately that all students can thrive and grow as they use math to solve problems and study our world.
