Amy Gookin

English Language Development Specialist

I have been a teacher in The Portland Public Schools for 27 years!! I teach English As A Second Language to elementary students who are new to the country. In addition to teaching all subject areas, I help students and their families adjust to and succeed in American Culture and the Public School System. This requires becoming culturally assimilated while maintaining first language and cultural identity. I am passionate about learning from and enjoying Cultures and Ecosystems of the world. I have done archaeology here in Maine and in Mallorca, Spain and studied Dolphins in Greece. I have travelled throughout the U.S and visited Canada, Mexico, Belize, Costa Rica, The Netherlands, Italy, Morocco, Cambodia and Thailand. I hope to raise funds to take my students on field trips in and around Portland to learn about the Culture and Natural Environment of Maine.
