Gillette Elementary School

San Antonio, Texas

About

Gillette was opened in September 1960 with twenty-four classrooms and the other necessary auxiliary facilities. The architectural design of Gillette, especially the front entrance, was different from any other Harlandale I.S. D. school at the time. The first principal of Gillette was Mr. Willis Rains. He served as principal until he retired in 1981. Gillette continued to grow to accommodate the ever increasing student population.

In 1985 additional classrooms, a school library, and air conditioning were added to the school campus. Additionally, in 1990 a pre-kindergarten unit was also added to the campus. By 2000 the "old Gillette" was bursting at the seams and a new campus was built on the site. The older school building housed Wright and Schulze Elementary students and staff while their home schools were modernized and was later demolished.

The current principal is Mrs. Lorena Jasso. Under Mrs. Jasso's guidance the school achieved recognitioin for student progress, an enhanced AVANCE pre-kindergarten program, dual language classrooms, and added additional computer labs.

Gillette Teachers

pre-k-5 teachers

We are Gillette Elementary, located on the Mighty Southside of San Antonio. We are a Title 1 school, grades Pre-K-5, with about 700 students, and 96 % are at risk. Our purpose is to build the first ever student-constructed Outdoor Classroom. We want to convert a 2,700 square foot aging and unused playground into an outdoor classroom that will be used by all grade levels to develop a rich teaching environment for all of our students. This will require planning, time, labor and money. The committee has created a ‘needs and wants’ list for our new classroom. Each and every aspect of this project, including school-wide funding activities, construction, calculations, upkeep and planning will be done in the classrooms. Each grade level will be responsible for some aspect of the classroom dependent upon their age and ability level. Teachers will guide students through problem solving and the creative aspects of this project. We estimate it will take about a year to complete. After construction, classes can use this space for all curricular subjects and STEM- and TEKS-based activities including but certainly not limited to plant cycle, water cycle, graphing, personal financial literacy, graphing, data collection, measurement, literacy experiences, art and music activities and energy transformations. Your support would drive our mission and help us create enriching experiences. The experience-rich facets of this classroom go far beyond the typical classroom walls and textbooks our kids have now. We need your help in any way you’re able to give it to make this a lasting.
