About

Established in 1933, Jefferson Elementary School (JES) occupies approximately 15 acres of beautiful real estate in Waikiki. Its facilities include regular education and special education classrooms along with a district Autism School. Approximately 400 students attend Jefferson, with a large population coming from twenty-three different countries. Jefferson’s Primary School Adjustment Program (PSAP) has received national certification from the Children’s Institute in Rochester, New York. Jefferson is one of only 13 schools statewide that have received such certification.

The hard working teachers of Jefferson Elementary continuously implement our Harcourt Trophies Reading Program, Harcourt Science Program and Everyday Math Program with fidelity. Students are guided to achieve proficiency in the Hawaii Content and Performance Standards (HCPS III) and the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). The school also incorporates various learning opportunities into the intervention block, using such resources as IXL Math, and Compass Learning. Teachers have received training in differentiated learning strategies, response to intervention strategies, Research Investigation Process (RIP), Edison Benchmark System, and will further their knowledge using the Northwest Evaluation Associations – Measures of Academic Progress (MAP), and Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol.

Teacher

Kumu Alston is the Hawaiian Studies Teacher at President Thomas Jefferson Elementary School. Drawing inspiration from his background in theatre for young audiences, he strives to constantly integrate less "traditional" teaching methods into his curriculum; most notably place-based learning, social-emotional learning, and differentiated instruction. Our school is located within Waikiki across from the Honolulu Zoo. At JES, more than 50% of students are Black, Latino, Native American, and/or Native Hawaiian and more than 50% come from low-income households. Due to these factors, JES is categorized as a Title I school. Funding is always limited and your donations and gracious support are deeply appreciated.
