I will be teaching secondary English Language Arts & Reading; I couldn't be more excited to embark on this journey. Education opened many doors for me. I want to share with my students the wisdom I have gained from the opportunities I have been afforded through these experiences. I want to be for my students, the adult I needed growing up. I want to help elevate their voices. This summer, I have been fortunate to teach 9th grade ELA at North Miami Senior High School. This intensive skill and knowledge development program aimed to increase student achievement as well as a comprehensive professional development program including seminars, discussion groups, workshops, and content and professional learning communities specific to teaching license areas. The feedback & impact these students made on me as a new teacher will last forever. With that being said, I need your help. If you're able and would like to help me set up my classroom for August, I would be SO grateful. I cannot teach towards an instructional goal...nor create a positive learning environment if my students do not have the resources and supplies they need to support them. 100% of the funds will go towards school supplies for my classroom and student needs. As a Teach for America 2017 corps member, I will be a pivotal, Biology educator for the Miami-Dade Public School System. Minority students in the Miami-Dade region fuel my urgency to provide them with the education that they essentially deserve. This summer I taught an entire class how to overcome the barrier of the science rigor by instilling confidence, challenges, and passion inside each student. My next steps will be in my own classroom this fall, where I will be empowering more students to become masters of Biology and masters of their own lives. Hence, I want to educate and elevate my students beyond the classroom. While teaching over the summer, I realized that the schools do not have the means to provide all of the tools and supplies needed to achieve my goals. A donation to my cause will help me make my classroom environment ignite the goals I am eager to achieve for my students. Math Teacher at Miami Northwestern Senior High School
I am so lucky and privileged to say that I've always had incredible educational models in my family. Both of my parents attended college and law school. My mother's older sister, my Tia Martha, was the first in our family to attend college and paved the path for law in our family, attending Notre Dame Law School (additionally a member of the first undergraduate class of women at Notre Dame) and later becoming one of the first prominent Latina federal judges in the United States. This feat was not overcome, however, without the understanding of what this meant for our family, her children, and other Latinas in the U.S. She knew she was afforded amazing luck and privilege to achieve what she did as the daughter of immigrants, one of five children, and an ESL student. She wrote her own story, but not without facing numerous challenges. This is the reality of many low-income, POC, immigrant and undocumented people in this country. Education is the key to success - the "American Dream" - but historically it hasn't been so accessible to all. There are systems in place that limit some to the rights and benefits afforded by money and education, and these systems out-date our own Constitution - that which sets to ensure the "inalienable rights of every man [and woman]." I am so grateful for the values instilled in me by my parents and family to ensure that these rights are given to everyone. I, like they, am grateful for my education, recognize my privilege to be where I am now, and am humbled by our story and our beginnings. Following my graduation from Claremont McKenna College in May, I joined Teach For America in the fight for equitable education for ALL children. Thus, I will be joining the Miami Northwestern Senior High School "Bulls" teaching high school mathematics to hundreds of brilliant and capable students who just need that one teacher to tell them, "yes you can." I hope to leverage my experience to encourage and empower my students of mostly marginalized identities and backgrounds so that they, too, can write their own stories and continue to change the system that limits our collective progress.
