\"You gotta READ, BABY, READ! The more you read, the more you know. Knowledge is power. Power is freedom and I want it!"

Listening to my students chant these words at the top of their lungs every Friday at our weekly celebration brings me so much joy. It's more than just getting to listen to 114 precious 5th graders chant about reading. It's the fact that these students already know how imperative reading is to their future success. At KIPP 3D Academy, we place a huge importance on reading. Students spend time both in school and at home doing independent silent reading. 

There's no denying that as we get deeper into the 21st century, information that previously was on paper is now moving digitally. I want my students to have experience at school with the digital tools that their peers in other parts of Houston already have in their homes. 

With this money, I will purchase 10 Amazon Kindle as well as Amazon gift cards. The gift cards will be used to purchase eBooks for the Kindles. These Kindles will be kept in my classroom for students to use as a reward for meeting their independent reading goals. When my students get to high school and college, I want them to be able to say they've had experience with eBooks. Digital books might be the only types of books found on college campuses by the year 2022 when my students go to college, and I want them to be set up for success.
