The Description
With these funds I will be able to purchase noise canceling headphones, clip boards, slant boards for writing, exercise bands, and miscellaneous school supplies like binders, notebooks, papers, folders, etc. I teach 8th grade special education students at Freire Charter School of Wilmington which is in it's founding year. Many supplies have been found to help our students or we have seen benefit students in similar situations. Noise canceling headphones would help our students during independent work time and research when their is lunch or gym happening. These headphones have had great reviews and would be just what our students need. They are $64.99 each and I am asking for 6 of these headphones, putting the total of the headphones at $389.94. Exercise bands have been a buzz word around schools lately. Many teachers have been experiencing success with them. Students use them to expel energy even when sitting. Here is an article written by a teacher proving just that. I have found a pack of 5 for $14.95. I am asking for 3 packs to make 15 total bands and putting the total cost of the bands at $44.85. Clipboards are a great tool when students are writing from sitting in seats not traditionally at a desk or a table. Our students have gotten use to this accommodation and we are currently out of supply. On Amazon there is a pack of 12 for $22.95, which can be found here. For students with more needs with their fine gross motor skills and handwriting, I am requesting 2 slant boards to accommodate their individual needs. The slant boards are $40.85 each, putting the total of the slant boards at $81.70. This would put the total at $539.44 before taxes and fees. I am also requesting an additional $100.00 for classroom supplies that we go through such as notebooks for reading and writing journals, paper, binders, folders, etc.
Our students come from all over Wilmington and New Castle County. They have come from middle schools where they may not have been getting a quality education. Wilmington is a city that faces high crime and murder rates. In the first four months of 2015 there were 9 murders/homicides. For our students, education is a way to break the cycle of crime and present opportunities beyond high school.
Back Up Plan
If I do not meet my goal I will purchase the noise canceling headphones first because they are of most priority to my students at this time. I will then look at the total funded and see what can be purchased on our list and saved for later. I really hope that these supplies can become a reality to show our students that they deserve the best resources for their education and futures.
